Do You Smell That?

August 31, 2009

Ristuccia Arena outside

It wasn’t me.  No, really, do you smell that?  Of course you do, because that’s the smell of cooler air moving into New England and more importantly, zamboni fumes at Risuccia Arena in Wilmington.  As unofficial skates for the Bruins started today many thoughts of sugar plums danced in every Bruins fan’s head.  So, with happy thoughts, wishful thinking, and high hopes of a successful season I bring you a list of “one-liners” that summarize my questions leading up to training camp.

-Who or what is coming back for Phil the Thrill?

-(as reported this morning)How great would it be if Krejci really were ahead of schedule and ready for opening night?

-Tuukka or Dany behind Timmy?

-Line combos…more options for the top three lines than an algebraic equationalgebraic equations

-Who’s Chara’s right hand man?

-Pete, as much as I would have liked Boullion because of his style, what’s with all these former Hab additions addiction?

-Is Bergy’s brain back on track?

-With the increase in ticket prices and most of the upper bowl sold out, will I be attending a Bruins game this year?

-Did this team really improve over the off-season?

-Who is going to step up from Providence this year?

Rene_Rancourt fist pump-Did Rene Rancourt stay in shape enough to do that fist pump all the way into June?

Is Wheels going to play on the right side or the left?

Is Sturm going to produce like he used to?

Can Recchi endure a full season plus playoffs here?

Can Savard serve it up like last year without Kessel?

Did Savy work on his triple deke with Charlie Conway?

Charlie Conway_D2Do non-hockey players/fans who have seen the Mighty Ducks still think the triple deke is actually a move rather than standard puck handling?

How far will the Black & Gold go this year?

Kessel Missing From Roster (edited 3:11pm)

August 28, 2009

phil kesselOn the Boston Bruins main website, Phil Kessel is missing from the roster.  Does this mean something is going to happen with him in the near future or does it simply mean that he is not considered part of this organization since he is still a free agent?  The sooner this happens, the better.  So, I will leave you with this poll:

Edit 3:11 pm: Kessel is back on the Bruins website…it may very well have been a freak accident while they were doing some housekeeping on their website.  Either way, he’s back on it.  However, the Sharks just dumped big money off to Vancouver…are they looking at Kessel, or Heatley? hmmmmmm…

The Most Epic Bruins Ice Girl Contest

August 23, 2009

boston_bruins_ice_girls headerThis time of year is always very exciting for hockey fans. Days in New England gradually get cooler, the kids start going back to school in the coming weeks, the rookie camps break relatively soon, and of course, the Ice Girls higher ops choose their squad to keep the fans entertained between whistles. So, what does that mean for YOU, the reader of the Spoked B? You get to pick your favorite from the new crew of lovely ladies. How am I going to run this? March Madness style, in the fall. My guess is they will be announced around the time that training camp goes on so, I will deem this tournament, SEPTEMBER MADNESS: The monumental search for 2009-2010’s most epic Ice Girl (brought to you by The Spoked B).

Here’s the rules/regulations/details:

1. I will set up a bracket that will be randomly selected out of a hat, or maybe one of my hockey helmets if I am feeling very festive.

2. There will be a two day period where you will be able to vote on the website and determine who you think deserves the glory of being The Spoked B’s most epic Ice Girl for 2009-2010.

ice_girls_home page3. Once the decision has been made I will accept any and all bribes from any of the actual Ice Girls who believe they are most deserving.  If their bribe is sufficient, a Florida recount will be made and Al Gore’s frown will not be upside down.

4.  If no bribes are made, and the decision has reached it’s final Frontier, the winner will get their own tab on the top of the main page where all who visit The Spoked B can appreciate how you all voted.

So that is the contest.  I hope all of you will enjoy it.  Who will be the winner?  Will it be Jenna, will it be Yolanda, or will it be Brianna?  I have zero clue, I just pulled those names out of my…ear.  Either way, this promises to be better than March Madness.  So, start getting your office pools together and get ready to fill out your brackets because SEPTEMBER MADNESS is just around the corner!

Derek Morris Video

August 20, 2009

Derek MorrisHere is a look at a video of what Derek Morris could provide to the Bruins offensively.  Honestly, when was the last time that a Bruins blue-liner jumped up into the offense like this?  This could easily change the dynamic of the way this team operates in the offensive zone.  However, this is assuming that Morris can resurrect himself out of that Phoenix slump that everyone seems to fall into.  Ask Peter Mueller 5 years from now (off the record of course) if he could have better overall numbers elsewhere… start with plus/minus and go from there.

Kessel Update

August 17, 2009

phil-kesselI saw this on the USA Today website…When asked about the negotiations between himself and the Boston Bruins Kessel said:

“It’s at a stalemate and I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Kessel said. “…I think it could go either way at this point.”

That’s ok, we already knew that Phil.  Kessel said that his shoulder is at about 95% and that he expects to be back early to Mid-November.

“I’m in the strength phase now.”

For the full story, you can find it here.

My Opening Night Line-up

August 16, 2009

Claude Julien being awesomeGreetings everyone! For those of you in the New England, I hope you enjoyed the fantastic weather we had this weekend, albeit very humid. Anyhow, I was thinking today while enjoying a nice frosty beverage of an adult nature about what the opening night line-up would be like. So, me and my crew debated for a while and this is what we collectively agreed to…

Lucic – Savard – Ryder
Sturm – Bergeron – Wheeler
Recchi – Sobotka – Kobasew
Thornton – Begin – Bitz

Chara – Wideman
Stuart – Morris
Ference – Hunwick

Thomas
Rask/Sabourin

So, that’s the jist. That is definitely a darn good team and that is without Kessel or Krejci in the mix. Rookie camp begins September 5th and full training camp opens on September 12th…those days can not come soon enough!
